Texas Gov. Greg Abbott recently announced that he would be directing the state’s Department of Public Safety and National Guard to shut down six points of entry along the border amid a surge in migrants. He called the crisis “dire” and explained how agents have been overwhelmed by the chaos happening at the border.
According to law enforcement sources from Customs & Border Protection, they are dealing with what may be one of the “worst migrant humanitarian crises in the agency’s history.” An estimated 8,000 Haitian migrants continue to work their way under the Texas Port of Entry bridge and are entering at a pace of 800-1,200 per eight-hour shift. Agents even said they started using a whiteboard to keep track of the number of migrants entering the camp because they were arriving at such a pace that the systems rendered an inaccurate count.
Border Patrol agents went on to say that they are overwhelmed in the area and don’t even have enough community resources to deal with the single adults and families with small children. One source even admits the system is “collapsed” at this point and that they don’t have enough security to prevent any crimes.
Gov. Abbott did not say how long he would keep the ports shut or which ones specifically, but that the federal agency, Customs and Border Protection, asked the state to step in and assist. President Joe Biden still lacks the commitment to securing our border and protecting Americans, especially in border town communities.
“The sheer negligence of the Biden Administration to do their job and secure the border is appalling. I have directed the Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard to surge personnel and vehicles to shut down six points of entry along the southern border to stop these caravans from overrunning our state,” Gov. Abbott said.
Drone footage shows around 8,200 migrants waiting to be processed at the international bridge in Del Rio, TX. Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin said that the number had only been around 4,000 yesterday and “nearly doubled” in a single day. He said Border Patrol was overwhelmed and that he was told the situation is out of control.
One DHS source reveals that agents had 208,887 encounters in August, which is a 2% drop from the 212,000 encounters in July but still an overwhelming figure. July’s numbers were the highest that the agency has seen in over a decade. August 2021 migrant encounters is still a 317% increase over August 2020, which saw 50,014 encounters under the Trump Administration.
The Biden administration has continued to blame former President Donald Trump for his role in “sealing off legal pathways” and contributing to the “root causes” in Central America, like poverty, violence, and corruption. But critics have blamed Biden and his administration for their rollback on all Trump-era policies, including the Migrant Protection Protocols.
At this point, it’s beyond belief that the President has essentially opened the borders and allowed anyone to come in with a free pass. He has promised a pathway to citizenship while running overwhelmed facilities with conditions worse than the ones that were under the Trump administration and morale at the lowest it’s ever been with agents. If President Biden was so concerned about health and vaccine mandates, the southern border would be closed already.
