Chairman of the Lamar County Democratic Party Gary O’Connor has been facing calls for his resignation after referring to Republican South Carolina Rep. Tim Scott as an “Oreo.” As defined by Dictionary.com, the term ‘oreo’ is sometimes used as a “disparaging and offensive slur for a Black person who is regarded as having adopted the attitudes, values, and behavior thought to be characteristic of middle-class white society, often at the expense of their own heritage.” Only Democrats would use racial slurs to attack non-racist comments.
Sen. Scott is the only Black Republican in the Senate and slammed President Biden in his Republican rebuttal speech, saying Biden only delivered “empty platitudes.” He talked about how Democrats throw money at certain issues because they think they know best and that he only gets called ‘Uncle Tom’ and the ’n-word’ by progressives.
“Hear me clearly: America is not a racist country. I’m an African American who has voted in the South all my life. I take voting rights personally. Republicans support making it easier to vote and harder to cheat,” Sen. Scott said in his speech.
O’Connor’s racial slur was included in a since-deleted Facebook post where he was responding to Scott’s Republican rebuttal.
“I had hoped that Scott might show some common sense, but it seems clear he is little more than an oreo with no real principles,” O’Connor’s post reads.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has asked O’Connor to step down over his remarks, calling it “disgusting, hateful and completely unacceptable” and that he should apologize to Sen. Scott immediately.
O’Connor’s Facebook post comes shortly after the slur “Uncle Tim” was trending on Twitter. It was in reference to “Uncle Tom,” a subservient character in the novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” Twitter let the racist phrase remain live on the platform for twelve hours and, instead, blamed an algorithm for not catching and removing it earlier.
Texas Rep. Pat Fallon also called on O’Connor and the entire Lamar County Democratic Party for allowing comments that are “abhorrent, insulting and unforgivable.” He called on the Democratic Party of Texas and the NAACP to condemn those words and ensure that the party takes swift action to censure him. “This kind of behavior is not tolerable in Texas, the United States, or in any political party,” he said.
Other critics demanded the resignation of O’Connor over the fact that Democrats have called out Republicans for questionable social media posts in the past too. Users wrote that the party should demand “equality” and take action to encourage O’Connor to resign his party chair.
Sen. Scott shared on Fox News that the racial attacks from liberals prove that the Trump Administration and Republicans “got it right” regarding a record-breaking economy that does not discriminate against skin color. He said that the radical left is exposing their hypocrisy and true motivation and that it has nothing to do with “ending prejudice” and everything to do with claiming more power.
“There’s a coming backlash to this liberal oppression that is becoming front and center and they’re not even hiding their hands anymore. That’s why it’s so important that we stand in the gap for this nation because the greatest comeback in American history is on its way,” Sen. Scott said.
Sen. Scott has delivered a message of hope and promise compared to the gloom and divisive Democratic message. The radical left wants to find a race issue with everything, even though the issue has nothing to do with race.
