House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was recently profiled by USA Today journalist Susan Page for an upcoming biography “Madam Speaker: Nancy Pelosi and the Lessons of Power,” which will be released April 20.
Over the course of ten interviews, Pelosi discussed her many brawls with “The Squad,” a group of radical left democrats, over progressive policies. The Squad currently includes Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, Jamaal Bowman, and Cori Bush. They are known for fighting aggressively and publicly with other Democrats over climate action, Medicare for All, gender and race issues, open border policy, and other radical left goals.
During the interviews, Pelosi made it abundantly clear that she does not get along with “The Squad” and that they have a lot to learn about the Congress of the United States. She criticized the group over trying to run things in D.C, adding that they’re “not a one-person show,” and that many centrist-leaning Democrats are not going to promote their far-left ideology. If anyone knows how to run a one-person show, it’s Pelosi.
House Speaker Pelosi and The Squad have been battling it out for quite some time now. Frustration grew with the Squad that the Speaker had been putting the interests of the more conservative members of the caucus over the priorities of the left, with some of the most progressive members wanting Pelosi out of Congress. They said she’d been pursuing impeachments to former President Donald Trump with rapid speed while acting slow to embrace ideas like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All.
Pelosi first criticized the Squad in a July 6, 2019 interview when talking about a bill that would free up $4.6 billion in funds to deal with the humanitarian crisis on the southern border. She said that they were the only House members to vote against the bill and criticized them for tweeting about their complaints instead of talking to members in person. “All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world. But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got,” she said.
Ocasio-Cortez, the most outspoken member of the Squad, has battled with House Speaker Pelosi on a number of issues. Ocasio-Cortez has criticized Pelosi numerous times for concentrating her critique on female congresspeople of color while Pelosi has argued that Ocasio-Cortez should stop attacking fellow Democrats publicly. Page wrote in her interviews for the book that Pelosi’s “anger at the four new progressive congresswomen was palpable” and that she adopted a ‘child-like voice’ when discussing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Other members of the caucus have also complained about the squad, particularly AOC, for being too liberal. “We need to not ever use the word ‘socialist’ or ‘socialism’ ever again…We lost good members because of that,” one member said during a post-election conference call among House Democrats.
Pelosi’s biography also highlights her experiences with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, as well as her career in politics and being a House Speaker. She even took the time to criticize Obama for getting all of the credit for Congress deals during his presidency.
It was only a matter of time before Democrats started turning on one another. Nothing like political theater.
