In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and cancel culture, many establishments and institutions have felt pressure to succumb to pushing a radical left agenda. Between the “Cancel Hamilton” controversy and petitions to get rid of history books in school that “ignore white supremacist violence,” woke extremists have stopped at nothing to push the threat that white supremacy and Confederate rebellion is still very much alive, especially in our universities. This is all to get their votes, of course. And now, they have challenged one of the only universal languages we have today – music.
In one of the radical left’s latest announcements, the University of Oxford has said they will consider scrapping sheet music altogether, including the classic works of Beethoven and Mozart, for being “too colonial” and focusing too much on European music from the slave period. In a recently proposed reform, the institution is targeting undergraduate courses in music for causing ‘students of color great distress’ and adds that the music’s connection to the past would be a slap in the face to many students. The professors add that they plan to address ‘white hegemony’ in their music courses and focus less on ‘white European music.’
“Oxford welcomes visits from numerous speakers and professional performing ensembles. Students enjoy performance and composition workshops, and play an active part in the life of the faculty and their colleges – in chapels, orchestras, ensembles, bands, and stage performance, and in musical outreach to the broader community,” the Oxford course website currently reads.
Other professors in the department argue against moving away from their current course description, adding that music was first found on a Babylonian tablet from ancient Iraq and has no origins in the West anyway. They argue that music from a certain time period is not ‘Western’ or ‘White,’ and have pushed against the notion that music can be racist. Mind you, the faculty who are proposing these changes are “almost all-white” and have added that they are worried that their ‘privilege to white music’ would give preference to certain teachings. This is the brainwashed mentality of the woke mob – where everything that does not compliment their agendas has the privilege and is considered racist.
Liberal-leaning professors have suggested scrapping the program altogether and focusing instead on a more inclusive range of musical studies like “African and African Diasporic Musics,” “Global Musics,” and “Popular Musics.” One professor even suggested adding pop music events to the curriculum, which would include studying 2021 Grammy Award-winning pop star Dua Lipa’s Record-Breaking Livestream, as well as artists who have demanded former President Trump to stop using their songs. At this point, it’s evident that the move is for political gain and nothing else.
Another extreme example of how BLM and the ‘woke mob’ plan on infiltrating classrooms and work environments are through the Critical Race Theory. Critical race theory, which is rooted in Marxism, pushes words like “systematic racism” and “white privilege” through loose narratives. And if you disagree with that philosophical framework, then you are denying that any or all racism exists. It’s a particularly dangerous and divisive framework, considering that some of the Critical Race Theory teachings are used in work training that teaches employees to “be less-white.”
Coca-Cola, for example, was under fire for teaching a controversial anti-racism course that told employees that you must be confronting racism through “understanding what it means to be White, challenging what it means to be racist.” Through the PowerPoint slides, they used the words “white” and “racist” alongside each other and as one term entirely.
The entire movement pushed by the ‘woke mob’ is racist in itself. It wants the framework of education and teachings to be solely through the lens of race. If that isn’t considered racist, then what is?
