Tim Walz is trying to straddle a line. His job is to look like an everyman, the guy down the street. Your high school teacher, oddly enough. It seems that he’s trying to look like someone who might be a Republican if only that dastardly party hadn’t gone so far off the rails.
After all, he just wants some “commonsense gun control.” He’s even a tough-on-crime type! He worked to make Minnesota safer.
Except, history doesn’t really support that.
In fact, it sort of supports the opposite.
Data from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety shows an increase in murders during Democrat vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz’s (D) time as governor of Minnesota, even as state-level gun control increased during the same time, as Breitbart News has pointed out.
FOX News reviewed Minnesota Department of Public Safety data, noting that there were 104 murders in Minnesota in 2018, which was the year before Walz took office.
However, in 2019, Walz’s first year as Governor, murders increased by 12 percent to 117. Then, in 2020…[murders] “skyrocketed to 185. In 2021, the state recorded 201 murders, 182 in 2022, and 172 last year,” Fox News reported.
A push for more and more gun control coincided with the surging murders.
For example, on February 21, 2018, the Star Tribune reported that DFL gubernatorial candidate Walz campaigned on an “assault weapons” ban.
That was just one anti-gun law Walz signed into effect.
And we know it did nothing.
Now, one might argue that since 2020, homicides increased across the board, but note that the increase in Minnesota started in 2019. While the US saw a modest increase in homicides in 2019–less than two percent–Minnesota saw a 12 percent increase.
Plus, let’s talk about Mr. Tough-on-Crime’s response to the George Floyd riots in Minneapolis. Basically, he dragged his feet rolling out the National Guard despite it being requested far earlier. The National Review has a piece touching on that, among other failures by Walz.
See, when the NRA referred to Walz as a “chameleon,” they weren’t wrong. Walz will be whatever he needs to be. He’ll be the good progressive when he needs to be, he’ll be Mr. Aw Shucks at other times because he’s needed to be that right then. He’ll go after Yale graduates despite having shared the stage with a plethora of them.
The one thing he can’t seem to be is competent.
The murder rates in his state, under his watch, shot up well beyond the national average. He failed to get help into Minneapolis as entire neighborhoods burned to the ground. Family businesses were destroyed. Lives were ruined. Walz could have at least mitigated the issue by providing the help that was asked for when it was asked for.
He didn’t.
He pushed gun control on the people of Minnesota under the pretense that it would save lives and murders increased. That is Walz’s legacy in Minnesota and that will be the Harris/Walz legacy if they get into office.
Let’s not pretend otherwise.
