I have no idea whether all the stuff Donald Trump said on Wednesday will help him win or lose the election, but I do know it’s hilarious. That’s got to count for something, right?
After sending the press into apoplectic shock by questioning Kamala Harris’ racial identity at the National Association of Black Journalists, Trump held a rally in Pennsylvania in which he kept the laughs rolling. Speaking in front of a packed arena, the former president launched into a re-enactment of Harris’ staged phone call with the Obamas in which the latter endorsed her presidential run.
This was vintage Trump and one of the funniest moments of the campaign.
TRUMP: Cause everything about Kamala Harris’ roll-out, it’s phony and it’s fake. Did you see when President Obama and Michelle called, did you see?
“Hello, hello, yes, yes, who is this? Oh, this is Michelle and Barack. Oh, oh, so surprised to hear!” They’ve got four cameras in front. “Oh, I’m so surprised!” It’s on speakerphone.
“Listen, we just want to congratulate you on destroying Biden, I mean, on winning the…”
Hey, is Joe Biden gonna, was that the phoniest phone call you’ve ever seen?
In another moment that drew laughter, Trump was talking about Venezuelan gangs committing attacks on police in America when he claimed that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are sitting around the White House “trying to figure out who’s dumber.”
TRUMP: Yesterday it was reported that more than 1000 members of the savage Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua are plotting to conduct ambush attacks on police and law enforcement in the United States, all the while Harris and Biden sit in the White House and try and figure out who’s dumber. They sit in the White House. Think of it. Massive, massive numbers of Venezuelan gang members.
What Trump is describing is true. While the mainstream press won’t touch the story, local news stations picked up on the report that says a “green light” has been given to Tren de Aragua members to carry out attacks. One of the cities involved is Denver, CO.
With that said, I know this stuff makes a lot of Republicans wince, not because they are deeply offended, but because they think this is harmful to Trump’s re-election effort, and by proxy, harmful to down-ballot races. Is it all this fresh controversy, specifically the stuff that happened at the NABJ, going to drag the former president down? I don’t know. Maybe it will, but this is who Trump is. He’s never going to change, and he’s never going to stop making fun of Democrats, even when it starts a racial controversy that the Harris campaign is no doubt salivating over.
In short, it is what it is. Enjoy the ride and laugh a little. We’ll see how it turns out in November.
