Joe Biden’s disastrous late-June debate performance has birthed one of modern history’s most astonishing news cycles. Things rarely surprise me in politics, but it’s been legitimately shocking how quickly things have turned for the current president.
You don’t see this happen to Democrats. The press always circles the wagons. That is until they didn’t, and the feeding frenzy surrounding Biden’s obvious senility is only growing. Things are so bad that even Chuck Todd and George Stephanopoulos have decided to start telling the truth about the situation.

It’s not just the press that’s the issue, though. A recent op-ed by Geroge Clooney asserting that Biden should drop out of the race has set the president’s campaign on fire. His handlers are responding with paranoia, and that’s never a good sign.
According to a report from MSNBC’s Morning Joe, the Biden campaign now believes Barack Obama is working against them behind the scenes.
SCARBOROUGH: I’ll say one thing that we do have to underline here just so viewers can follow. What’s going on behind the scenes is the Biden campaign and many Democratic officials do believe that Barack Obama is quietly working behind the scenes to orchestrate this.
If you had told me three weeks ago that we’d be having a conversation about Barack Obama working behind the scenes to force Joe Biden out of the race, I’d have called you crazy. Not even the most astute of conservative commentators could claim to have predicted that. It would have simply been unfathomable. Yet, here we are, with Biden on the ropes and credible reports that Obama is pushing the panic button.
The scenarios by which the president recovers from this are getting increasingly far-fetched. Yes, four months is a long time in politics, and there’s still the possibility that some major event could reset the race. With that said, there comes a point where the hole is so deep that there’s no escape, and it sure feels like the Biden campaign is rapidly approaching that point. If they are now turning inward and attacking the godfather of the Democratic Party, they are losing, and they are losing badly.
What’s the turnaround point here? How does the press go from finally admitting that Biden is mentally incapable of holding office to giving him full-throated endorsements in a few months? Perhaps more importantly, how does the Biden campaign regain its footing when it comes to fundraising?
I can’t make any definitive judgments, but this sure feels like a campaign on the ropes. The press has painted Biden into a corner regarding his revelations of his senility, and the cash has stopped coming in. I don’t know how you recover from that. Maybe it’s possible, but I’m drawing a blank.
