New York City Mayor Eric Adams has waved the white flag on illegal immigration. Instead of asking for more resources or talking about building more shelters, Adams proclaimed on Wednesday that illegal immigration will “destroy” the city he leads.
That breaking point is courtesy of Republican governors Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis, who pioneered a relocation strategy for illegal immigrants from red states to self-declared sanctuary jurisdictions. Since 2022, tens of thousands of illegal immigrants have been bused or flown to places like New York City, and now, the flow is becoming organic as well.
Here’s what Adams had to say in response to that reality.

ADAMS: And let me tell you something New Yorkers. Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this. I don’t see an ending to this. This issue will destroy New York City — destroy New York City. We’re getting 10,000 migrants a month.
One time, we were just getting Venezuela. Now, we’re getting Ecuador, now, we’re getting Russian speaking coming through Mexico. Now, we’re getting Western Africa. Now, we’re getting people from all over the globe, have made their minds up that they are gonna come through the southern part of the border and come to New York City, and everyone is saying it’s New York City’s problem.
Every community in this city is going to be impacted. We have a $12 billion deficit that we are going to have to cut, every service in this city is going to be impacted. All of us. So I say to you as I turn it over to you. This is some of the most educated, some of the most knowledgeable, probably more of my commissioners and deputy commissioners and chiefs live in this community. So as you ask me a question about migrants, tell me what role you play. How many of you organized to stop what they’re doing to us?
How many of you were part of the movement to say, “We’re seeing what this mayor is trying to do, and they’re destroying New York City.” It’s going to come to your neighborhoods, all of us are going to be impacted by this. I said it last year when we had 15,000, and I’m telling you now, with 110,000. The city we knew, we’re about to lose, and we’re all in this together, all of us.
You’d be forgiven for thinking Adams was a Republican after that fairly epic bit of commentary. He’s not, though. Instead, he’s a far-left Democrat who doesn’t want to face the consequences of the very policies he has pushed and supported for years.
So, is illegal immigration going to destroy New York City? From a budgetary standpoint, I’d say Adams is likely telling the truth on that point. Do I feel sorry for him and those who live there? Not in the least. New York City long-ago declared itself to be a sanctuary city, and its residents overwhelmingly vote for Democrat politicians, from city commissioners to the president, every single election. Few places in the United States deserve to shoulder the burden of illegal immigration more than the Big Apple.
Besides, I was assured that there’s a poem on a very famous statue that demands illegal immigration not be curtailed. Funny how CNN’s Jim Acosta isn’t making that argument anymore, right? Still, there’s no turning back from the standard that was set by political attacks on the Trump administration. It is New York City’s moral duty to take care of those who arrive.
That means that the only response from the left to Adams should be to accuse him of xenophobia and perpetuating “replacement theory.” Because if a Republican gave the speech he gave, that’s exactly what the response would be. As they say, actions have consequences, or using my chosen spin on the phrase, it sucks to suck.
