In this episode of Democrat Symbolism Over Substance…
Gun grabbing Gretchen Whitmer is up to her gun-grabbing ways, again, gang.
As reported by the left-wing Detroit News, the embattled Michigan governor signed “the most far-reaching new laws aimed at curbing gun violence in decades in Michigan on Thursday, two months after a mass shooting on the campus of Michigan State University left three students dead and five severely injured.”
Just one problem.
The two gun-control measures Whitmer signed wouldn’t have prevented the February 13 MSU shooting.
As Breitbart reported, one of the bills Whitmer signed was universal background legislation. Michigan already has a law requiring background checks for handguns via a permitting process. While the new legislation expands to also cover long guns, the MSU shooter used a handgun.
The second bill is a gun storage law that applies to gun owners with minors in their homes, but the MSU shooter was a 43-year-old man who lived with his 67-year-old dad, so the new law wouldn’t have been triggered.
As I suggested at the top, Democrats are all about symbolism over substance — and lies, of course. Whitmer’s official press release was hilarious in its reference to “commonsense” legislation to curb pretend “gun violence.” (Democrats are also all about commonsense stuff and pretend gun violence.)
Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed commonsense gun violence prevention bills that will establish universal background checks for all firearm purchases and safe storage requirements.
In January, Governor Whitmer proposed this legislation during her State of the State address and has worked with the Michigan Legislature, community groups, law enforcement, students, and parents following February’s shooting at Michigan State University and the shooting at Oxford High School in November 2021 to get these commonsense measures that will reduce gun violence signed into law.
Again, zero that would’ve presented the MSU shooting, in which the attacker killed three people — and himself — with a handgun. Yet Looney Tunes Whitmer crowed:
Today, we are turning our pain into purpose and honoring those we have lost with commonsense gun violence prevention legislation supported by a majority of Michiganders. Universal background checks and safe storage are long-overdue steps we are proud to take today that will save lives by keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and domestic abusers and children in the home.
I want to thank my partners in the legislature for getting this done, the advocates who fought so hard to make this happen, and every Michigander impacted by gun violence who shared their stories. We will keep working together to prevent mass shootings, reduce gun violence, and save lives.
Lemme review Whitmer’s comments: wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, and wrong.
Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II parroted Whitmer, saying in part:
Every gun death is preventable, yet so many Michiganders, including me, have lost people they love to the senseless tragedy of gun violence. Today, we are taking action on commonsense reforms supported by a majority of Michiganders. Universal background checks and safe storage laws will save lives and help keep families and kids safe at home, in the streets, at school, and at work.
Again, let’s review: wrong, wrong, and oh hell no, it won’t.
The Bottom Line
In the oft chance there are readers who don’t understand the basics of firearms, lemme repeat:
First, there’s no such thing as “gun violence.” Guns don’t kill people; people kill people. Second, the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun — or, as in the case of the Michigan State shooter, the bad guy shoots himself.
Third, bad guys don’t obey laws — gun laws, included. And fourth, further restricting the rights of law-abiding gun owners will do zero to stop evil people from committing evil acts of violence.
