There have been some pretty nutty meltdowns over the past day regarding the student debt forgiveness matter that is presently before the Supreme Court.
The reaction of Democrats and some in the media has been wild, showing that they don’t care about the Consitution, all they care about is paying off their base for the bribe that was offered before the midterms. They know they will likely lose since there is no support in the Constitution for Joe Biden’s ability to unilaterally forgive student debt. But they want to put on a show now so that the leftists base will blame SCOTUS and not who they should be blaming — Joe Biden and the Democrats who lied to them on this issue.
So let’s walk through some of the craziness and wrong-headed thinking that was erupting outside the Supreme Court.
Let’s start with this little bit of insanity from the teachers’ union boss Randi Weingarten. This is a meltdown for the ages.
Weingarten raged:
“This is what really pisses me off! During the pandemic, we understood that small businesses were hurting, and we helped them. And it didn’t go to the Supreme Court to challenge it. Big businesses were hurting, and we helped them. And it didn’t go to the Supreme Court to challenge it. All of the sudden, when it’s about our students, they challenge it! The corporations challenge it. The student loan lenders challenge it. That is not right. That is not fair. And that is what we are fighting as well when we say: ‘Cancel student debt!'”
What’s the problem here? “Money for businesses” (like the PPP loans) was passed in Congress, so that was following the Constitution. It was not a unilateral decision by Joe Biden without Constitutional authority, like the student debt move. Weingarten knows that she’s just being dishonest. If this was truly important to the Democrats, why didn’t they try to get it passed in Congress when they controlled both chambers?
Some of that Democratic base was agitating outside the Supreme Court earlier to get the Court to go along with what they wanted, chanting, “This is what democracy looks like.”
Except, no, it isn’t, and unfortunately, those protesters may owe a lot on their educations — which debt they voluntarily incurred — but they apparently didn’t learn that the SCOTUS isn’t supposed to be influenced by their protest. Indeed, their protest to try to influence the Court raises again the question of 18 U.S.C. ? 1507, the provision that says you shouldn’t have “pickets or parades in or near a building housing a court of the United States” to try to influence any judge in the course of his/her duty. The Court is supposed to decide, based solely on the Constitution, not be pressured by screaming mobs.
There was this from Steve Mazie who reports on SCOTUS for The Economist.
Biden and the Democrats scammed these folks but they’re hoping they’ll blame the GOP and SCOTUS.
In final nutty remarks on the subject, I give you Democratic Socialist Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) as he inveighs the Court to “follow the law.” SCOTUS is following the law — the Constitution. There is no law supporting what Joe Biden did here. The government has no obligation to use our tax dollars to pay off your debt.
“We all have tremendous amounts of student debt because of the predatory practices of our capitalist economy,” Bowman railed. Um, no. You have such debt because you voluntarily incurred it. If you don’t understand the debt or can’t pay it, you shouldn’t take it on. Not understanding is not an excuse for not paying your debts. It wasn’t the “predatory practices,” it was the involvement of the government that made the college tuitions disconnected from market prices that caused the huge skyrocketing of tuition — the very opposite of what Bowman was saying. The answer is less government, not more government, and more reality in pricing as a result.
But Bowman went even further. Not only did he want all student debt canceled, but he also said all of it should be free. He even claimed that “they should pay us to go to school,” claiming they are contributing to this “democracy” and making it “stronger.” Ah, yes, we should all pay for your gender studies degrees because you leftists are all just so awesome. They truly think that. They truly are that twisted.
Who does Bowman think the “they” is who is going to pay for his two graduate degrees? We all would have to pay including the ironworkers and the kid working in McDonald’s. That’s who Bowman wants to make pay for his expensive degrees. This is the insanity of socialism. He would steal from the corporations to pay for this. That still wouldn’t be enough. We’d all have to pay and be poorer as a result, with even more crushing taxes.
Bowman rails about paying for defense spending. But that is the main responsibility of government — to provide for the defense of the nation. The Constitution doesn’t talk about paying off people’s worthless graduate degrees as a responsibility of the government.
This is all just about Democrats throwing a big enough fit to look good so the base doesn’t throw them out, but rather blames the GOP and SCOTUS instead.
