Deputies near Orlando, Florida released bodycam footage showing the arrest of the suspect in Wednesday’s shootings which took the lives of three people and injured two more.
The suspect, nineteen-year-old Keith Melvin Moses, is accused in two separate incidents in the Pine Hills neighborhood. Deputies responded to a call around 11 a.m. and found 38-year-old Nathacha Augustin dead from a gunshot wound. The shooter later returned to the area and killed Spectrum News 13 reporter Dylan Lyons and a nine-year-old girl named T’yonna Major.
He also wounded Spectrum News videographer Jesse Walden, 29, and the nine-year-old’s mother.
Deputies tracked down Moses in the area soon after and took him into custody. Not surprisingly, the video is hard to watch.
WARNING: Graphic footage.
After the officers subdued Moses, he repeatedly screamed, “they’re killing me! They’re killing me!” and “let me go, let me go!” He then started screeching in a high-pitched, maniacal voice, “I can’t breathe!” over and over through the rest of the video. “He may be on drugs,” one officer noted.
They then cut a handgun from his pocket. “It feels hot,” an officer says.
Throughout, the police remained calm and appeared to handle the situation professionally.
At news conference Wednesday, Sheriff John Mina described the timeline of the shootings:
Despite the arrest, many questions remain, including: what was the suspect’s motive?
Orange County Sheriff John Mina said that Moses was an acquaintance of the woman killed on Wednesday morning but has no known connections to the mother, 9-year-old or journalists who were shot.
Mina said it’s unclear why the journalists were targeted, adding that the two Spectrum News 13 journalists were in Pine Hills covering the homicide from earlier that day when they were shot.
“It’s unclear why exactly they were targeted. And, you know, certainly we’re going to look into that,” Mina said.
Another question remains: why was this man out on the streets? At 19, he already had a lengthy rap sheet which includes at least eight felony and 11 misdemeanor arrests ranging from gun charges, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, and grand theft.
Moses has already been charged with first-degree murder in the initial shooting of Augustin, and further charges are expected. He is being held without bond at the Orange County Jail.
Although this man is behind bars, where hopefully he will stay, he leaves heartbreak and tragedy in his wake:
Many questions remain, and hopefully, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will get the answers.
