It’s the summer of 2021 and American athletes are still refusing to respect the flag or sing the National Anthem. It started in 2016 when Colin Kaepernick knelt during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racial inequality. He knelt throughout the rest of the season and received highly polarized reactions from both sides, but managed to land a Nike deal out of it. Since then, many ‘woke’ athletes have followed in his steps.
During a recent Olympic qualifier ceremony, hammer thrower Gwen Berry turned away from the U.S flag during the national anthem and placed a T-shirt that read “Activist Athlete” on her head. While talking to CNN’s Don Lemon, Berry said she was exercising her constitutional right and that she would not “stand for any type of symbol or song that does not stand for all people in America.” Others argued that she shouldn’t be representing America if she hates it so much.
Some GOP lawmakers, including Sen. Tom Cotton, have requested Berry to be removed from the U.S Olympic Team. Sen. Cotton said if she’s “so embarrassed by America” then there’s no reason to compete for our country.
Other members of the radical left have been pushing for the national anthem to be replaced with “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” otherwise known as the Black National Anthem. Vanessa Williams even performed the song on PBS’ A Capitol Fourth Program on Sunday, which sparked controversy.
High-profile Democrats, including Reps. Maxine Waters and Cori Bush, also bashed the U.S.A and the Declaration of Independence over the fourth of July Weekend. Waters claimed that the Declaration of Independence was only talking about “White men” in the “all men are created equal” section. Bush claimed that the fourth of July is about White American freedom and that “Black people still aren’t free.” She received a lot of backlash regarding that comment.
Even the New York Times has joined in on ridiculing patriotic celebrations. In the article titled “A Fourth of July Symbol of Unity That May No Longer Unite,” the New York Times suggests that the US flag is ‘alienating to some’ and ‘offensive’ to others. Twitter Users argued back that it wasn’t the flag that was dividing Americans, but the newspaper.
But there is one American athlete standing up to radical left pressure and publicly saying that he loves the United States and will continue to do so. Boxing legend George foreman posted to Twitter on Independence Day saying that he loves the United States and that he’s not ashamed to say it. He posted the patriotic message alongside a photo of himself holding the American flag after taking gold for our nation at the 1968 Olympics.
“For about 54 years, people have ask me not to keep saying “I love America” Well I do and I’m not ashamed. Don’t leave it; Love it. Happy 4th of July,” Foreman tweeted.
The tweet went viral and quickly racked up more than 108,000 likes.
Foreman went on to write that the greatest day of his life was when he put on his colors and represented the United States in the Olympics. He said he loves the flag and that some people haven’t been brought up with people who were patriotic to point them in the right direction. He adds that a lot of people have died so that they can have the privilege of taking a knee during the National Anthem.
If the Dems continue to put up a fight, it’s because they are losing the political power for themselves. It has nothing to do with the welfare of Americans, social justice, equality, or anything else they ramble on about.
